Warren J. Blumenfeld

The history of homosexuality and bisexuality is one of pain and pride, of repression and rejoicing, of invisibility and visibility across the nation. Throughout the ages, homosexuality and bisexuality have been called many things: from "sin" and "crime," to "orientation," and even "a gift from God."

This slide presentation resurrects a history that has been hidden for too long. Warren J. Blumenfeld chronicles this epic story beginning in ancient times before the construction of sexual identity as we now know it, to the beginning of an emancipation movement in the 19th century, and into the 20th century with the Homophile and Gay Liberation movements, and the impact of AIDS.

Warren J. Blumenfeld is the founding director of the National Gay Student Center, co-author of Looking at Gay and Lesbian Life, editor of Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price, and the Journal of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Identity. In addition, he is co-producer of the documentary film, "Pink Triangles", a film study of prejudice against lesbians and gay males. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the Social Justice Education Program, University of Massachusetts- Amherst. He holds a Masters Degree in Special Education from Boston College, and a Bachelors Degree with Secondary School Certification from San Jose University.
