University at Albany

TO: Vice Presidents, Deans, Faculty and Staff
FROM: President Karen R. Hitchcock
DATE: April 10, 2001
SUBJECT:    Provost Search

In light of the importance of the post and the intense interest in this search, I want to get word to you as quickly as possible on the outcome of the search for a new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Carlos Santiago has chosen to accept my offer of appointment to the position of Provost, effective immediately. Dr. Santiago joined the UAlbany faculty in 1988 and has served with distinction as a teacher, researcher and, more recently, administrator. His strong national reputation was made evident by the breadth and depth of the search process.

Dr. Santiago has been a most effective leader in the campus academic community, and I look forward with real pleasure and enthusiasm to continuing and strengthening our collaborative effort to continue the remarkable growth and progress we have all made together. Each of us who has had the opportunity to work closely with him knows of his tremendous ability, integrity and sensitivity. I can think of no one more committed to the values of this University, nor anyone better able to help us bring our high aspirations to fulfillment.

It is important, too, to note that after a year-long national search the Search Committee, headed by Dean Frank Thomspon of the Rockefeller College, provided an exceptionally strong pool of candidates for this key position. Dean Thompson and the Committee members deserve the thanks of the entire University community for their service.
