The University at Albany invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Established in 1844, the University is the oldest state-chartered public institution of higher education in New York. The University at Albany has more than 600 full-time faculty, generates more than $90 million dollars in external funding annually, and enrolls 16,000 students, of whom 5,000 are at the graduate level. Designated as a University Center of the State University of New York, and noted for its achievement in both academic excellence and diversity, Albany has a broad mission of undergraduate and graduate education, research and public service. Through its nine degree-granting schools and colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business, Criminal Justice, Education, Information Science and Policy, Nanoscience and Materials, Public Affairs and Policy, Public Health and Social Welfare), the University offers bachelor's degrees in more than 100 fields of study, masters degrees in 82 programs, and doctoral degrees in 38 fields.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer for the College of Arts and Sciences. Under the general direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, s/he is responsible for program development and delivery, curriculum, fund raising, budget and personnel. Specifically, the Dean will:

The Dean will be responsible for a College comprised of 374 full-time faculty, 69 FTE part-time faculty and 110 support staff, currently organized in twenty-five academic departments and twenty research centers. The faculty offer the University's core undergraduate and graduate programs in the humanities and fine arts, mathematics, the natural and physical sciences and the social and behavioral sciences. These programs annually enroll more than 650 doctoral students, 700 master's students, and 5,100 undergraduate majors. Annual sponsored funding in the College of Arts and Sciences equals $12 million and includes support from federal, state and private sources.

Qualifications:  Primary qualifications for the position include a successful record of administrative accomplishments and leadership in higher education; academic accomplishments that meet the standards for a tenured appointment as a full professor in one of the disciplines of Arts and Sciences; a commitment to the highest standards of undergraduate and graduate education and research; experience in fiscal and personnel management; a demonstrated commitment to promoting affirmative action; and real accomplishments in program development and fund-raising.

Nominations and Applications:  For best consideration, materials should be submitted prior to November 8, 2001. Review of applications and nominations will begin immediately and will continue until an appointment is made. Application materials should include a letter of application addressing how the candidate's experiences match the position requirements, a curriculum vita, and the name, title, e-mail, business address, and business and home telephone numbers of at least five references. Submission of materials as a MS Word attachment is strongly encouraged.
