The Goldberg Variations (Dance)
Music by J.S. Bach, Choreographed and performed by Mark Haim, performed by pianist Andre Gribou
The duo of Mark Haim (dancer) and Andre Gribou (pianist) create a seamless interplay of movement and music to Bach's renowned Goldberg Variations. This choreographic interpretation of the music is a diverse compilation of 20 solo variations that range from one to ten minutes, honoring the pure dance tradition and re-defining virtuosity in modern dance today. Each variation is a miniature dance with its own expressive language. Haim adds an interactive element to the performance by inviting audience members to become both choreographer and dancer, moving him as he moves them around the stage. This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to explore the infinite possibilities of movement with the dancer as he creates on stage.
- Thursday, June 28, 2001, 12:30 pm, University at Albany, Performing Arts Center
Cuartetango: Tango String Quartet (with dance and song)
The Tango was created for and by Italian and German immigrants as a way to express their losses and their displacement in their new home in South America. It was a "pick up" art form where musicians would join in as the night progressed. Beginning as a quartet of 2 guitars and 2 violins, the Germans expanded the sound through the addition of the bandolin (accordion). It was, in essence, an explosion of feeling though sound and movement. In this performance, Cuartetango presents the emotion and the history of the Tango through music, dance and song, enhanced by slides and visuals creating the cultural atmosphere reminiscent of Argentinean night life.

Woody Guthrie's American Song (Music and Theater)
Capital Repertory Theatre
As a preview to the full production, coming to Capital Repertory Theatre in January and February 2002, we present this musical theater odyssey. It evokes the vivid, emotionally gripping life and times of Woody Guthrie, an exceptional man who used his words and music to depict American life from the Depression to the Dust Bowl, the union movement to 1960's counterculture. Conceived, and adapted by Peter Glazer, American Song offers a feast of Woody Guthrie's best songs complemented by reminiscences drawn from his many essays. Through music and drama we follow Woody's life, travel the American landscape, and face the social issues of America. It is truly a celebration of the spirit and people of this nation.
