Chief of PoliceSubject: Proactive Steps to Insure Safety on Campus In light of our nation's heightened precautions in response to the threat of additional terrorist attacks, the University at Albany is taking many proactive measures to upgrade the level of security on campus. Some of these measures will be obvious to the campus community. Other measures represent internal steps taken by the University Police Department to increase security preparedness, and, while these measures may not be as obvious to the community, they are nonetheless essential in assuring overall safety for our campus citizens.
The following security measures are in effect immediately:
- There is an increased presence of UPD officers at all public events on campus, especially those that might attract persons outside our immediate campus community.
- Security protocol at public events has been increased to include metal detection and pat-downs when appropriate. All students, faculty and staff are advised that large bags, coolers, umbrellas, backpacks, etc. will NOT BE ALLOWED inside public event venues.
The following are steps in proactive preparedness:
- A protocol for handling mail has been established and widely distributed and is also available on the UAlbany home page from the September 11th link.
- Three additional metal detectors have been purchased to increase security effectiveness at large public gatherings on campus.
- A bomb detecting canine unit is being created on campus to provide us with greater flexibility in executing our own security protocols.
- UPD is working closely with Albany Police and Fire Departments, the State Police and their specialized agencies such as the Hazardous Materials Team, and other agencies as necessary to assure a coordinated and swift response to assistance calls.
The safety and security of every member of our campus community is critically important to us. We will take every measure necessary to insure your continued protection and safety.
