QUESTIONS TO EXPECT:

Although I do not expect any questions from previous exams to be repeated on your examinations, inspection of previous exams will significantly improve your test-taking skills. The best guide is Examinations for the Fall, 1999 course, which are posted on the course web site.

MAKE-UP EXAMS:

If you need to miss an examination, you may take a make-up. Doctors' notes are not required, but you must inform me in advance that you will miss the exam. You may leave a message on my answering machine, in which you should give your name and I.D. number. A five point penalty may be subtracted from your score for failing to inform me in advance. I will make exceptions to the penalty where justified (such as your car broke down on the way to the exam, and you could not get to a phone.) I expect that, with rare exceptions, no student will miss more than one exam. The schedule for the make-up examinations is shown below. If you have a compelling reason for not taking the make-up at the scheduled time (such as travel to a University athletic event, or your illness and load of other responsibilities made it impossible to prepare for the exam), then you may reschedule the make-up at a time that is mutually agreeable to us. However you must make this arrangement before the make-up is given, unless there is a compelling reason for not doing so. Students who take the regularly scheduled exam will keep their exams, but the make-up exam is a secure exam and may not be kept by a student. The make-up exam also exists in different versions, and is an exact equivalent to the regular exam except that the questions are different. YOU MAY NOT TAKE THE MAKE-UP IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE GRADE YOU RECEIVED FOR THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED EXAM!!!

MAKE-UP EXAM SCHEDULE:

Exam I Friday, October 6 4:15-5:10 PM LC? Exam II Friday, October 27 4:15-5:10 PM LC? Exam III Friday, November 17 4:15-5:10 PM LC? Exam IV Friday, December 8 4:15-5:10 PM LC?

GRADING POLICY:

I guarantee that at least 20% of the class will receive A- and better, and that at least 50% of the class will receive B- and better. In addition I guarantee that:

430 points or better will earn an A
415 points or better will earn at least an A-
400 points or better will earn at least an B+
385 points or better will earn at least an B
370 points or better will earn at least an B-
355 points or better will earn at least an C+
355 points or better will earn at least an C+
325 points or better will earn at least an C-
310 points or better will earn at least an D+
295 points or better will earn at least an D

CHEATING POLICY:

Cheating will not be tolerated. On examination days, numbered tests will be placed on the desktops before you enter. Each examination will exist in different versions. The proctors will insure that tests have not been moved after the exam begins. Moving tests to different locations will be regarded as cheating. I will compare your answers with those of students on either side of you and students sitting behind you. Pairs of students with highly similar answers may be charged with cheating. Students sometimes claim that their answers were similar because they study together. This will not be allowed as a defense. If you study together do not sit together. Do not place your paper on the desk so that it may be seen easily by others. In Spring 1994, fifteen students accepted failing grades rather than have me bring charges before J-Board.

EXTRA CREDIT:

There will not be any opportunity to do extra work to improve your grade, with the following exception. You must first enroll in ACas111 (Beginning Fundamentals of Research). This course is 2 credits and meets Mondays 4:30-6:30. You must have permission of the instructor, but I am the instructor. If you pick an area of nutrition as your research topic, and if I agree that your topic is of general interest to the ABio117 class, you may, in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the ACas111 class, prepare and deliver a talk in December for the ABio117 class. This talk will be about 20 minutes long, and I will work with you in the preparation of this talk and rehearse with you the delivery of your talk to the class. Your mini-lecture will then become part of the content of the course, and questions based upon your lecture will appear in the final examination. If you complete this assignment in a satisfactory manner, I will raise your ABio117N grade by one letter (for example, a B- becomes an A-). You will receive an independent grade for the ACas111 course. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS OPPORTUNITY, YOU MUST MAKE AN AGREEMENT WITH ME BEFORE THE ADD/DROP PERIOD IS OVER.

The following is the catalog description for ACas111. A sequel, ACas211, Intermediate Fundamentals of Research, is also offered.

A Cas 111 Beginning Fundamentals of Research (2) Students learn research methodology in the natural and social sciences. Students access scientific databases by using on-line bibliographic search techniques, consult doctoral level research scholars, develop hypotheses and perform experiments to test them, and write research papers and make presentations at scientific symposia. This course emphasizes the first group of these activities, up to the actual performance of experiments, but some students may go further. Students are expected to spend at least three hours working on class work per week outside of class. May be repeated once for credit.

DIET ANALYSIS:

You must keep a record of all foods you eat for a week and analyze your diet by the Diet Analysis Plus program. Two analyses are required, one towards the beginning of the semester and one towards the end. In the first analysis, you will learn the results of your current eating habits. You will then make any changes in your diet that you think appropriate, and in the second analysis you will measure the effectiveness of these changes.

The diet analysis requires you to do the following:

    1. Download the Diet Analysis Instructions and the Diet Analysis Report Sheet from the Bio117 Home Page.
    2. Make a record of all foods you eat for a week, as directed in the Diet Analysis Instructions.
    3. Enter the data into the Diet Analysis Plus program and print a portion of the results, as directed in the Diet Analysis Instructions.
    4. Fill out the Diet Analysis Report Sheet, obtained from the Bio117 Home Page.
    5. Write a one to two page typed essay, using the guidelines in the Diet Analysis Instructions.
    6. Submit the following.
      • (a) TWO PAGE PRINTED REPORT OF YOUR DIET ANALYSIS, printed from the Diet Analysis Plus program as directed in the instructions..
      • (b) DIET ANALYSIS REPORT SHEET, obtained from the Bio117 Home Page, properly filled out.
      • (c) ONE TO TWO PAGE TYPED ESSAY, prepared as described in the instructions

You may submit your materials by:

    • handing them in at the lecture center before or after class, or
    • placing them in a sealed envelope in my mailbox in Biology 122 by 5:00 PM of the due date.
    • DO NOT SLIDE YOUR DIET ANALYSIS UNDER MY DOOR!

Due dates for your diet analysis:

Extensions:

You may request an extension of up to one week by e-mailing me at until 5:00 PM of the due date. (You do not need to give your reasons.) Longer extensions may also be requested.

  • YOU MAY NOT REQUEST AN EXTENSION BEFORE OR AFTER CLASS.
  • YOU MAY NOT REQUEST AN EXTENSION BY TELEPHONE.

Grading:

You will receive full credit if the diet analysis is done properly and if your essay is done thoughtfully. A 5 point penalty may be given for an unapproved late submission. A diet analysis which is improperly done will be returned to you for re-submission. There is no penalty for this. You will learn if your diet analysis must be redone by checking your grades on the course Web site. You must come to my office in person to pick up your diet analysis and to discuss with me why it is not in an acceptable form.

After you find your Diet Analysis grade posted on the Bio117N home page, you may obtain your graded analysis by coming to my office. I may ask to see your ID. (This is a security measure to prevent a student picking up someone else's analysis in order to obtain personal information about that individual.)
