Guided Field Experience in TESOL

To meet NYS teacher education requirements, the program includes 100 hours of field experience.


Guided Field Experience and TESOL Seminar

To meet NYS teacher education requirements, the program includes 2 semesters of student teaching at elementary and secondary levels.


Gain Research Experience

UAlbany is an R1-classified research university. As a TESOL master's student, you may have an opportunity to participate in special internships or grant-funded research projects on language learning/teaching.

Launch Your TESOL Career

With the significant enrollment increase of English Language Learners nationwide, English language teachers are in high demand. The master's program qualifies you for NYS certification in TESOL that enables you to apply for K-12 ENL/ESL positions in the state of New York .

Completing this TESOL graduate program tells potential employers that you are eligible to teach children and adolescents to read, write, and speak in English, and to support English language learners in K-12 schools.

UAlbany is widely respected for its teacher preparation programs throughout New York State and across the nation. Completing this program allows you to connect to a large alumni network of education professionals that includes teachers, principals, superintendents, policy makers, and program directors.

Alternate Master's (non-certification path)

If you aren't interested in working in public elementary or secondary schools, in the state of New York, you may consider the 36-credit TESOL master's that's not built to meet curriculum requirements for NYS K-12 teacher certification. The non-certification-based program prepares you to work with adult English language learners in the United States or abroad.

Special Admissions Requirements
Prior to admission, you need to have completed one college-level linguistics course and 12 college credits in a foreign language.

Required Credentials & Deadlines

Required Application Materials:

  • Transcripts from all schools attended
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least two letters of academic recommendation from Professors)
  • One of the following entrance exams:  GRE, edTPA, GMAT or Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators
  • Statement of Goals
  • 1 introductory course in linguistics and 12 credits in world language/culture

The deadline for application to this program is rolling in the Fall and Summer, Department Assistantship Consideration is not available.
