Specifically designed for NYS-certified teachers with a master's degree and 12 college credits in a foreign language, this advanced graduate certificate equips you with the knowledge you need to teach English to non-native students new to the United States.
Coursework is grounded in grammar fundamentals and linguistic pedagogy, and includes field experience that prepares you to meet the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
This program is delivered entirely online and is open to working teachers across the state.

Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages
Learn how to design TESOL lesson plans and content, construct test items, and assess reading, writing, and audiolingual skills. This course includes interaction with students learning English as a second language.
Approaches to English Grammar
Increase your knowledge of English grammar and master aspects of the language that are fundamental to successfully teaching English to new language learners.
Introduction to Language in Education
Study linguistics and language usage and development topics related to instruction and learning. In this course, you look at the different ways linguistic knowledge can inform teaching strategies.
Teaching Methodology for English Language Learners
Develop expertise in NYS language education pedagogy, course content, and assessment standards for English language learners in grades K-12. Topics include state regulations, family interaction, and school board communication strategies.
Language, Literacy and Technology
Explore the role of electronic texts in reading and writing instruction, and how technology can affect language and literacy development in native, foreign, and second languages.
Field Experience: 50 hours
The TESOL certificate program includes 50 hours of field experience.
Practicum: 20 days
To meet NYS teacher education requirements, the certificate also includes a minimum 20-day practicum working with elementary or secondary school students learning English as a second language.

The advanced graduate TESOL certificate provides you with an additional teaching certification that indicates your ability to teach children and young adults to read, write, and speak in English, and to better support English language learners (ELLs) in your content-area classrooms.
The credential is in high-demand due to the increasing diversity of students in American public schools, and enables you to apply for ENL/ESL teaching positions.
In addition, UAlbany is widely respected for its teacher preparation programs throughout New York State and across the nation. Completing this program allows you to connect to a large alumni network of education professionals that includes teachers, principals, superintendents, policy makers, and program directors.
You complete all coursework for the certificate online and fulfill your fieldwork requirements within your current or another local school district.
With guidance from your field experience coordinator, you connect with a local, professionally or permanently certified teacher with substantial TESOL experience who serves as your mentor. The student teaching supervisor then works with your mentor to guide each you through the field experience and teaching practicum.
Fieldwork assignments are submitted and reviewed online, and include classroom observations and reflections, lesson planning and evaluation, interactive discussion, and video recordings of your teaching practice.

You can earn your master’s degree part-time or full-time through online courses and/or campus-based evening and summer classes that work with your schedule.
In this designated OpenSUNY+ program, you also have access to comprehensive support services including a 24/7 help desk, online tutoring, and personal advising.
Required Application Materials:
- Transcripts from all schools attended
- Three letters of recommendation (At least one letter should be from a past professor, or someone who has worked with you in an academic setting and can evaluate your academic capability. The other two can come from individuals who have observed you in a professional context (paid or unpaid employment). All the recommendations should come from people who would be able to evaluate your capability for academic success (collaborating, working independently and effectively, managing diversity, etc.))
- Statement of Goals
- Valid NY State certificate in a classroom teaching title
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university
- 12 credits in language other than English
The deadline for application to this program is rolling, Department Assistantship Consideration is not available.
