Dean's Bio

Robert Bangert-Drowns, Ph.D., was named the eighth dean of the University at Albany's School of Education in 2009 after serving as acting dean of the School since January 2008.  Dr. Bangert-Drowns previously served as the School's associate dean for Academic Affairs since 2003.  He has been on the faculty of the Department of Educational Theory and Practice for over two decades. Bangert-Drowns joined the UAlbany faculty in 1987 after earning a joint doctorate in education and psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He received his master’s in psychology from the University of Michigan and his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgetown University.

Bangert-Drowns co-chairs the Campus Committee on University-Community Engagement and has worked to enhance the university’s many initiatives with regional, national, and international communities, but especially its educational involvements with the Albany City School District.  He chairs the Advisory Board for Know Your Schools~for NY Kids and is a member of the Mayor’s Albany High School Task Force. He received the 2012 National School Development Council (NSDC) Cooperative Leadership Award from the Capital Area School Development Association.

Bangert-Drowns directs the Albany Consortium for Research in Instructional Design and Theory (ACRIDAT), a forum and work group for students and faculty interested in research on instruction.  He has been Co-PI of a four-year $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, called Learning Computational Thinking in Context: Using Problems and Cases in Financial Market Regulation. The project integrates computational thinking and financial market regulation to enhance learning in both fields. He also was a member of the management team of the Center for Information Forensics and Assurance and a project director at the National Research Center for English Learning and Achievement where he investigated the effects of writing on learning and the nature of student learning engagement.

Bangert-Drowns is well known for his research in instructional design and technology, learning engagement, meta-analytic methodology, and educational programs designed for the prevention and rehabilitation of drug-related social problems.  His work has appeared in such journals as Psychological BulletinReview of Educational ResearchAmerican Educational Research Journal, and Addiction.  Bangert-Drowns is a member of the American Educational Research Association and its Instructional Technology special interest group, the American Psychological Association and its Educational Psychology division, and Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.  He is on the Consulting Board of the Computers in Human Behavior and the Editorial Review Board of the Journal for Research on Technology in Education and is a consulting research editor of Educational Technology Research and Development.  He received the Harold E. Mitzel Award for Meritorious Contribution to Educational Practice Through Research from the Journal of Educational Research and the Hinsdale Scholar Award for Scholarship and Professional Promise from the University of Michigan's School of Education.
