Increasing access to hospital maternity care practices that support and promote breastfeeding, especially exclusive breastfeeding and breastfeeding of longer duration, is a key Prevention Agenda strategy to improve the health of women, infants and children and to reduce chronic disease risk in the long-term. This webinar will orient participants to NY’s flagship hospital breastfeeding strategy, the New York State Breastfeeding Quality Improvement in Hospitals (NYS BQIH) Learning Collaborative. The webinar will also: review the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and its application in hospital quality improvement; identify important considerations in planning for hospital participation in BQIH; and share two hospitals’ perspectives on their BQIH experience.

This webinar seeks to reach hospital administrators, maternity care staff, affiliated primary care practices, and community partners such as local health departments, community health and breastfeeding coalitions, WIC Programs, lactation consultants and counselors with this important webinar on the BQIH Learning Collaborative.

Learning Objectives
After this program participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as the foundation for improvement in hospital maternity care practices.
  • Identify two important steps that interested hospitals can take to begin preparing for participation in the NYS Breastfeeding Quality Improvement in Hospitals Learning Collaborative.  
  • Describe hospital benefits derived from participating in the NYS Breastfeeding Quality Improvement in Hospitals Learning Collaborative and adopting the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as the standard of care.
