UAlbany Commencement News

March 26, 2021

Dear UAlbany Community:

As we begin the second half of the spring semester, excitement is building for our Class of 2021 and all who are looking forward to celebrating their success. Our Commencement planning team has been working diligently to create safe, meaningful celebrations befitting our graduates’ accomplishments.

We are very pleased to share with you that this year, all graduates from the Class of 2021 will have opportunities to celebrate in-person and online:

The Great Dane Graduation Experience, taking place May 15-19, is a new approach to the traditional ceremony. Rather than assigned seats and speeches, it is a ‘moving commencement’ where graduates will walk through the open-air Casey Stadium concourse at assigned times with their guests. The experience will last approximately 20 minutes, culminating in a formal crossing of the stage. Each graduate’s name will be announced as their guests cheer them on “from the front row.”

Our Virtual Commencement on Thursday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. will include the official conferral of academic degrees for all graduates, featuring traditional congratulatory messages from leadership and others from the campus community and a live lighting of the University Torch.

We are also delighted to invite our graduates from the Class of 2020 back to campus for their very own Great Dane Graduation Experience on May 20 and 21.

More information will follow in the coming days but in the meantime, please continue to check the Commencement website which will serve as the hub for frequent updates, FAQs, and more. Details will also be shared via email with all students and graduates who are eligible to participate.

Whether you will join us for these momentous occasions on campus, online, or both—congratulations to all of our graduates, and Go Great Danes!

Sincerely,

Carol H. Kim

Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
