Professional Interests

Dr. Sawyer’s professional interests include teaching, research, and clinical practice. He is particularly interested in research in the areas of multicultural competence and minority stress theory. His clinical interests include depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties (particularly with first-generation college students), stigma/marginalization, and grief and bereavement.

Approach to Therapy

Dr. Sawyer takes both personal and environmental factors into consideration when working with students. He has previous experience working at counseling centers in the CUNY system and as a doctoral intern at the University at Albany. His approach to therapy is primarily informed by psychodynamic and multicultural theory.

Approach to Wellness

Dr. Sawyer attempts to find a healthy balance between work and leisure. He enjoys golf, baseball, reading, and traveling to new places.
