President Rodríguez and Provost Kim have made the difficult decision to postpone the May 2020 commencement exercises.
Please read their message and review the critical information available on our
COVID-19 Commencement page for additional details.
A national conversation has emerged about how to address COVID-19 related delays and the many ways that we can celebrate the success and achievements of our students. A dedicated team of UAlbany staff is reviewing different possibilities, and details will be shared as soon as possible. Please continue to check your @albany.edu email address, as well as this Commencement website.
The information listed below is not updated.
If you are planning to complete your degree in May 2020:
Log in to MyUAlbany and select the “Apply for Graduation” link (located on the "Academics" tab and "Graduation" subsection) to access the online Degree Application form. This is a required form that notifies the University of your intent to fulfill your degree requirements at the end of the current semester and initiates the process for you to participate in your commencement ceremony. The degree application deadline is February 14, 2020.
Academic records will be reviewed by the Office of the Registrar, who will notify you of your status via your @albany.edu email address. If you have a deficiency, you will have until March 27, 2020 to correct it, or else your degree application will be withdrawn.
All application deadlines must be met and FERPA name restrictions released in order to have your name appear in the official printed program. Questions about degree requirements? Review the website or contact email@example.com.
If you have already completed your degree in August or December 2019, or January 2020:
Skip ahead to the next step if you have already received a diploma and met your degree requirements. Your name will automatically be printed in the Commencement program.
If you will not complete your degree requirements by May 2020 but wish to participate:
Complete the Petition to Walk Early Form by TBD, 2020. To qualify, you must have no more than two classes (8 credits) remaining to complete your degree requirements. A limited number of appeals will be approved based on qualifications and available space. Even if you are approved, your name will not appear in the Commencement program.
Review the schedule with family and friends, discuss ticket allotments, and determine who is attending what ceremony. If family and friends cannot attend, let them know they can tune in live! Every ceremony will be live streamed and accessible from the Video & Photos page.
TBD ceremonies will require guest tickets; all others will not.
Students must reserve guest tickets during completion of the Commencement Registration Form (see next step). There you will have the chance to include your guests’ email addresses so that they can receive Commencement updates directly via email. NOTE: Children two years and older, as well as any current UAlbany students who are attending as guests of the graduate, will require their own guest ticket.
The University-wide Undergraduate Ceremony does NOT require guest tickets, but you still need to register yourself to participate (see next step).
Direct your guests to visit our Family & Friends page for more information on visiting campus.
Completing the Commencement Registration Form allows you to participate in the outdoor University-wide Undergraduate Ceremony and/or your school or college ceremony. While guest tickets are not required for the University-wide ceremony, this is also where you will obtain guest tickets for your school and college ceremonies.
Register to attend your ceremonies:
In TBD all eligible graduates will receive instructions via email to visit Marching Order to complete the Commencement Registration Form. The registration deadline is TBD, 2020. This deadline must be met in order to participate in the ceremony.
The Commencement Registration Form is a separate and additional step from the Degree Application Form detailed in the first step. The Degree Application Form must be completed in order to be considered a UAlbany graduate and have your name appear in the official printed program; this Commencement Registration Form must then be completed if you wish to participate in any ceremonies.
Reserve your guest tickets:
TBD ceremonies will require guest tickets; all others will not. Children two years and older, as well as any current UAlbany students who are attending as guests of the graduate, will require their own guest ticket.
Should any unclaimed guest tickets become available, an email notification with instructions will be sent to registered students in late April, offering a chance to secure extra guest tickets on a first-come, first-served basis until all tickets have been claimed. The Commencement office is not able to accommodate any extra requests outside of this process.
You can manage your guest tickets up until the day of your ceremonies via Marching Order. Here you can assign email addresses to tickets, print physical tickets, email tickets directly to family and friends, and/or reallocate or release tickets.
Proper academic regalia - including cap, gown and tassel - is required to participate in ALL Commencement ceremonies.
Undergraduate regalia will be available for purchase from TBD through TBD, 2020 at the University Bookstore. Optional items such as diploma frames, class rings, and announcements are also available.
Academic regalia may be adorned with stoles, ribbons, and other decoration associated with your experience at UAlbany. Adornment must be tasteful, and inappropriate embellishments must be removed at the request of event staff and/or University officials.
Register to attend the Torch Reception
Celebrate Commencement with fellow graduates, family, friends, faculty, staff, and alumni! Take advantage of beautiful evening views around the iconic fountain as you mingle and enjoy hearty appetizers and a signature beverage. Graduates attend free but must register; guest tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. Details, including how to register, will be posted soon.
Support your Class Gift
The Class Gift is an annual tradition led by UAlbany’s Student Philanthropy Council. It is a way for UAlbany students, parents and families to give back to the University, and serves as a living tribute to great memories, an outstanding education, and a bright future. Details on how you can support the Class Gift will be posted soon.
Prepare for Photos
UAlbany partners with Island Photography to professionally photograph our graduates throughout Commencement weekend. The company will email and/or mail proofs to the students’ address/es on file. Students and families then have the option to purchase photographs if they wish. Students may REGISTER ONLINE for an optional formal portrait photo-session with Island Photography in at TBD date and location.
NOTICE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC AND MEDIA RECORDING: When you attend any Commencement ceremony, you enter an area where photography, audio and video recording may occur. By entering the event premises, you consent to such media recording and its release, publication, exhibition or reproduction to be used for UAlbany promotional purposes. Read our full photo release here.
