Apply to graduate. Register to attend your ceremony. Order your gown, tam and hood. There are many things doctoral candidates need to know in order to prepare for the hooding ceremony.
We are thrilled to honor SUNY Chairman H. Carl McCall as the recipient of the Medallion of the University. This award is the University's highest honor for distinguished service, and Chairman McCall will offer keynote remarks as part of this notable ceremony.
If you are planning to complete your degree in May 2019:
Log in to MyUAlbany and select the “Apply to Graduation” link to access the Degree Application form. This is a required form that notifies the University of your intent to fulfill your degree requirements at the end of the current semester. The application deadline was March 15, 2019.
Academic records will be reviewed by the Office of Graduate Education, who will notify you of your status via your @albany.edu email address. Please check with your department to ensure that all requirements have been satisfied. Dissertations or thesis are due by May 1, 2019.
All application deadlines must be met and FERPA name restrictions released in order to have your name appear in the official printed program. Questions about degree requirements? Contact email@example.com.
If you have already completed your degree in August 2018, December 2018, or January 2019:
Skip ahead to the next step if you have already received a diploma and met your degree requirements. Your name will automatically be printed in the Commencement program.
If you will not complete your degree requirements by May 2019:
There is no exemption for doctoral students to walk early, so you cannot participate in the 2019 Commencement Ceremony due to degree requirements and dissertation deadlines. Commencement Weekend 2020 is May 13-17, 2020.
Notify your guests of the ceremony date and time and determine who is attending. If family and friends cannot attend, let them know they can tune in live! Every ceremony will be live streamed and accessible from the Video & Photos page.
The University-wide Doctoral Hooding ceremony does NOT require guest tickets, but you still need to register yourself to participate (see next step). There you will have the chance to include your guests’ email addresses so that they can receive Commencement updates directly via email.

Completing the Commencement Registration Form allows you to participate in the ceremony.
All eligible graduates will receive instructions via email to visit Marching Order to complete the Commencement Registration Form. The registration deadline is April 16, 2019. This deadline must be met in order to participate in the ceremony.
The Commencement Registration Form is a separate and additional step from the Degree Application Form detailed in the first step. The Degree Application Form must be completed in order to be considered a UAlbany graduate and have your name appear in the official printed program; this Commencement Registration Form must then be completed if you wish to participate in any undergraduate ceremonies.
Proper academic regalia is required to participate in the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony.
Custom doctoral regalia can be purchased through March 25, 2019 and doctoral regalia rentals are available until April 12, 2019. Fill out the Doctoral Regalia Order Form and send your order to the University Bookstore. Optional items such as diploma frames, class rings, and announcements are also available.
REGISTER TO ATTEND THE TORCH RECEPTION
Celebrate Commencement Weekend with fellow graduates, family, friends, faculty, staff and alumni! Take advantage of beautiful evening views around the iconic fountain as you mingle and enjoy hearty appetizers and a signature beverage. Honorary toast and torch lighting will be held at 8:15 p.m. Graduates attend free but must register; guest tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. Graduates in attendance will receive a special gift from the Alumni Association at check-in. Click here to register and purchase guest tickets by May 14, 2019. No refunds issued after May 9.

PREPARE FOR PHOTOS
UAlbany partners with Island Photography to professionally photograph our graduates throughout Commencement Weekend. The company will email and/or mail proofs to the students’ address/es on file. Students and families then have the option to purchase photographs if they wish.

By entering the event premises, you consent to such media recording and its release, publication, exhibition or reproduction to be used for UAlbany promotional purposes. Once a Great Dane, always a Great Dane! For more than 150 years, the University at Albany Alumni Association has been keeping alumni connected – to each other and to their alma mater. All graduates of the University are automatically considered members of the UAlbany Alumni Association.
