Upstate New York Emergency Department Study

CHSR conducted a study of the Emergency Department (ED) of an upstate New York hospital to improve effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of care.

Evaluation & Research

The study was designed to answer the following research questions:

  • What factors contribute to ED bottlenecks?
  • What factors contribute to patients leaving the ED before completing the visit?
  • How can ED operations be streamlined to serve patients more efficiently?

CHSR researchers shadowed 96 patients to examine patient flow within the ED and between the ED and other departments. During the shadowing, researchers completed data collection instruments to record the times of activities and services that the patient received at admission, with a physician, and at discharge. CHSR also collected and analyzed data on laboratory test times and patient satisfaction.
