Growth through English Revisited.

Peter Smagorinsky

In this article, Peter Smagorinsky discusses the strengths as well as the weaknesses he finds in John Dixon’s 1967 landmark text, Growth through English. This text holds much for the modern day reader because it anticipates most of the student-centered ideas that have been generated since its publication. After discussing the many strengths of this work, Smagorinsky argues that the Dixon’s focus on individual growth without attention to relationships and responsibilities is a major weakness.
