Lawrence Schell

Dr. Lawrence Schell, a professor in the Department of Anthropology and Director of the Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities (CEMHD), has been awarded a four-month Fulbright grant in the Senior Research Scholar Category. He will conduct research in Anthropology at the Dipartimento di Biologia Evolunizionistica “Leo Pardi” of the Università degli Studi di Firenze during the upcoming 2010-2011 academic year.

The award will support research for a book on cities and health. The book will trace the history of health from before cities to the present, exploring the impact of urbanism and urbanization on human health. Florence will be used as a picturesque example. It has an extremely rich and well-preserved history in terms of both its physical presence and documents.

The Fulbright award supports activities towards the discovery and documentation of the physical features of the current urban landscape, the settlement pattern, the architecture, etc. that reflect the history of public health there.
