Experts Advisory: The University at Albany's Experts on Halloween

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 24, 2007) -- Halloween and popular culture, masks, costumes, haunted houses and the appeal of being scared are topics covered by UAlbany's Halloween experts.

Halloween decorations … Already? Spooky, but true. In fact, last year American consumers spent $3.2 billion buying Halloween decorations, making it second only to Christmas in decorations sales, according to a recent study. Sociologist Richard Lachmann can offer insight into the popularity of Halloween and its place in American pop culture.

From Little Bo Peep to Princess Fiona -- Young trick-or-treaters have been "modeling" their disguises and dressing up in their favorite costumes on Halloween for generations. In her book Dressed for Thrills: 100 Years of Halloween Costumes and Masquerade, art professor Phyllis Galembo documents the customs behind costumes from all over the world.
