Experts Advisory: Experts on Steroids, Race and Equity in Sports at the University at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. (July 12, 2007) -- Steroid abuse among professional athletes, race and equity in sports is covered by UAlbany's faculty experts.
Should Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig be in attendance when Barry Bonds eclipses baseball's most hallowed record? With Bonds just five home runs away from surpassing Hank Aaron's all-time career HR mark of 755, Selig said he hasn't decided if he will be in attendance. Will he or won't he? UAlbany lecturer Rob Edelman has authored books, including Great Baseball Films (Citadel Press, 1994) and Baseball on the Web (MIS: Press, 1998). He wrote an essay on silent baseball films for the recently released DVD Reel Baseball (Kino) and is one of the interviewees on the newly re-released DVD of The Natural.
Accusations of performance-enhancing drug use has clouded Bonds' pursuit of Aaron's record. In a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 18 percent of respondents said they believed accusations of steroid use were definitely true, 48 percent said they were probably true. Nineteen percent said the charges were probably or definitely untrue. UAlbany Psychology professor Bruce Svare has specialized for more than thirty years in the study of anabolic steroids, has authored over 70 scientific papers in leading professional journals and has written numerous books and book chapters in the field of behavioral neuroscience. He served on the National Institute on Drug Abuse Technical Review Panel on Steroid Abuse.
Race was a factor in a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, which found large differences in the views of black and white respondents. Fifty-seven percent of blacks are rooting for Bonds to break the record, while only 29 percent of whites want him to. UAlbany Vice President for Athletic Administration Lee McElroy's expertise includes race and equity in sports. He has testified before congressional committees on issues in college athletics, such as gender equity and the welfare of the minority student-athlete. McElroy was elected to serve as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) for 2006-07.
