UAlbany Career Advisory Network

The UAlbany Career Advisory Network (UCAN) links alumni with students in search of career expertise. The new and improved UCAN online platform provides easy registration and heightened privacy. You choose the type of assistance you would like to offer and how much time you would like to spend.

“People want to give back. This is an easy way to do it,” explained Alumni Association Career Service Coordinator Meg McCarthy who is getting the program up and running. Alumni are encouraged to sign-up now before the new system is introduced to students in early 2018.

The New UCAN: Quick, Private and Flexible

What has changed?
• UCAN create your profile in two minutes using LinkedIn
• UCAN choose the career assistance that you’d like to offer:
o Career conversation
o Mock interview
o Resume critique
• UCAN indicate the number of contacts per month: one through unlimited
• UCAN set an “out of office” notice if you are not available
• UCAN maintain your privacy: contacts are made through the system
• UCAN sign up for email or text alerts notifying you of a student request

Benefits to Students

This program offers another opportunity for alumni to stay involved. It supplements the work of the university and School of Business career services offices. School of Business Director of Career Services Deirdre Sweeney is excited about the new system. “School of Business alumni are always ready to help students. UCAN streamlines the process of connecting students with alumni.”
UCAN program director McCarthy is new to the University at Albany, having begun her position in October. She said, “Our alumni are doing amazing things. They come from so many different locations and backgrounds. Their insight is invaluable. As students see what others are doing, it opens their eyes to different career paths.”

Besides access to alumni professionals, UCAN provides webinars and other resources.
