Dean’s Advisory Board Doubles your Gift for the John Levato Scholarship

During his more than 40 years at UAlbany, John Levato served as a trusted counselor to thousands of students. A scholarship fund set up in his name commemorates his tremendous contribution to the school in the most appropriate way – supporting students.

Through the end of June 2015, members of the Dean’s Advisory Board will generously match all gifts made to the John S. Levato Scholarship, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. Gifts made to the School of Business general fund and the Office of Career Services also qualify for the match; each gift will be matched with a gift to John’s scholarship fund.

Dean’s Advisory Board member Jeff Black ’76 said, “As an adviser, John Levato employed his extensive knowledge of the School of Business, the university and the business world, but he also listened to each student’s life story and hopes and took into account their particular circumstance. Students always came first in John’s life. He cared about them and was committed to their success.”

As with many others, Levato was committed to Cara Smith’s success. In 2014, Smith ’15 was the first recipient of the award. She said, “John has an amazing legacy in the School of Business. The scholarship is a way of living up to his name. He played such a great role in so many people’s successes, including mine.”

Indeed, Levato critiqued Cara’s resume and provided career advice and tough love when she needed it. On one trip to his office, he encouraged her to enroll in the EY Trajectory program, at the time a brand new class at UAlbany. Her participation in the program led her to an internship and a job in information technology at EY. This summer she starts in information technology risk and assurance in EY’s Advisory Practice.

The goal of the scholarship is to have more students benefit from John’s memory, thus keeping his presence alive in the School of Business. Smith said, “It is important that his name continues.”

This is not the first award created in Levato’s name. Stacy Bash-Polley ’89 established the John S. Levato Endowed Teaching Award because of the help she received from him. The most recent recipient is accounting professor Paul Glotzbecker.
