How to Apply to the Ph.D. Program in Biology

The process for applying to a graduate program is handled through the Office of Graduate Education. Please check the application deadlines and requirements for applying to the program.

Once you have submitted your application through the Office for Graduate Education, the application will be sent to the Biological Sciences Admissions Committee for review.


  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology from an accredited institution. (M.S. degree is not required.)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Completion of GRE General Test.
  • Minimum TOEFL scores for international students (visit our FAQ page for more on this topic).
  • Undergraduate preparation should preferably include all of the following:
    • 18 credits in biology
    • 2 courses in mathematics (at least 6 credits)
    • 2 courses in physics with laboratories (at least 6 credits)
    • 4 courses in chemistry with laboratories (at least 12 credits), of which 2 courses must be in organic chemistry with laboratories
    • Courses in genetics and biochemistry required for applicants to the Molecular, Cellular, Developmental and Neural Biology (MCDN) doctoral program; courses in ecology, genetics, and evolution required for applicants to the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) doctoral program
  • Demonstrated research ability is an asset.


  • To apply for the doctoral degree program in biology, visit Graduate Admissions. Application deadlines are January 31 for the Fall and November 1 for the Spring. You will need to submit the University at Albany standard graduate application, 3 letters of recommendation, all graduate (if applicable) and undergraduate transcripts, and scores from the GRE General Test.
  • All applications submitted through Graduate Admissions are sent to the Biological Sciences Admissions Committee for review.
