Departmental Advice to Transfer Students

Art History Major
Welcome to the Art department at the University at Albany.

Department Website

The Art History Major is an interdisciplinary major in the Art Department, and draws upon resources throughout the College of Arts and Sciences. Art History majors study a wide range of historical periods, cultures, themes and media, and develop skills for critically evaluating and writing about works of art within their historical and cultural contexts. Students may take such diverse courses as Italian Renaissance Art and Architecture, Women in Art, Chinese Painting and Significant Cinema Directors.

In planning your academic career at Albany as a transfer student, it is important for you to use your Degree Audit Report (DARS) to determine where you stand in the program. The DARS shows you what you have credit for through courses transferred to Albany and through courses taken at Albany, and it shows what you still need to do to complete your degree. If you have any concerns about how your previous Art History coursework has transferred, use the Comments at the end of the Educational Plan to raise these questions with your advisor.

As you plan your program here at Albany, please consider the following points that are relevant to transfer students.

This major requires two introductory Art History surveys (ARH 170, 171) and three lower division electives. If your first semester at UAlbany is in the Fall, please plan to take ARH 170 if you have not yet completed it, and 1-2 lower division elective classes as needed. If your first semester is in the Spring, please plan to take ARH 171 if you have not yet completed it, and 1-2 lower division elective classes as needed.

Art History majors also need to complete a minor unless they have a second major . In your first semester here , you may plan to include 1 class for your minor. For a list of minors and the courses required to complete them click here.

Note any general education requirements you have yet to complete. Round out your schedule by selecting 1-2 as needed.

The MAP (Major Academic Pathway) shows how the Art History major might be completed in four years. You may use this to design your own personal MAP of any remaining requirements you need to meet.

1. You are advised to complete and submit your Educational Plan as soon as possible, to maximize access to available seats

2. Your Educational Plan will be reviewed by a member of the Art History faculty who will contact you by email with comments or questions. When your proposal is approved, you will receive your AVN (Advisement Verification Number). This will allow you access to the registration system to create your fall schedule.
