Highlights of some of our group facilitation and consulting work in 2003

A
study of data quality issues regarding newly required client-based data
revealed that the biggest problem was missing data. A workgroup was convened to develop a multipronged approach to
work with a few, select county offices, identify the specific barriers to
obtaining the most critical client-based data, and develop solutions to
obtain the required data. However, rather
than focus on the data per se, the approach focused on the decisions that the
data could support. Of particular
interest was the use of data to support budgetary decisions at the local, state,
and federal levels of government.
Student
and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
University at Albany, SUNY
The
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a government,
computerized system that maintains and manages data about foreign students
and exchange visitors during their stay in the United States. The University
at Albany organized a compliance team to figure out how best to comply with
these federal reporting requirements required of its 1300 international
students. The group evaluated alternative software products and figured out
how the reporting requirements could be integrated with existing information
systems.
The
IT Commons
University at Albany, SUNY
The
needs of students and faculties for information technology (IT) courses and
resources know no bounds! A universal challenge for colleges and universities
everywhere is how to meet these ubiquitous needs. The solution that emerged at the University at Albany, through
a highly collaborative process led by Peter Bloniarz, the newly appointed
Associate Provost for Informatics, is the IT Commons.
Black
Lung Disease Clinical Consensus Conference
US Health Resources and Services Administration
A
panel of medical and health care experts spent a full day hearing
presentations from specialists in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of
Black Lung Disease and on the development of evidence-based guidelines. In a
remarkable working session that started after the presentations and stretched
past midnight, the panel developed and agreed on 20 pages of recommendations
for diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and quality. The next morning the panel presented its recommendations to the
full conference, including the invited specialists and BLD clinicians and
service providers, receiving their comments and suggestions. The panel then revised its document and
adjourned after lunch.
Program-Wide
Achievements, Challenges, and Future Direction
Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP)
The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) is charged with transferring the knowledge and
technology of the space program to small businesses. This strategic
planning retreat, the first involving all four states participating in the
program, addressed these questions:
·
On a program-wide basis, what are some things that
have worked well … and that we might work toward enhancing?
·
On a program-wide basis, what are some things that
have not worked so well … and that we might work towards improving ?
·
On a program-wide basis, on what issues do we need to
focus with regard to SATOP's future?
Korean Executive Program in Information Policy and
Strategy
University at Albany, SUNY
A
new group of Korean government executives visited with us to learn about
government and information policy issues and practices in New York
State. Topics ranged from systems
thinking and strategic planning to the application of information technology
to support executive decision making. With the growing numbers of executives
who have participated in this program, the alumni have established their own
website, the Albany
Forum.
