Problem Set 8 Key

  1. Rules to words
    1. A word-final nasal (probably a consonant) is deleted after a vowel.
    2. A high vowel becomes a glide before another vowel.
    3. A high front vowel is inserted between a strident coronal obstruent (e.g., s, z, š, and "zh" and the affricates containing them) before any coronal obstruent (dentals, alveolars, palatoalveolars, and palatals) when the obstruents are separated by a morpheme boundary.
    4. A velar stop obstruent becomes a palatal before a high front vowel.
    5. The vowel in the third syllable from the end of a word (the pre-penultimate syllable) is stressed.

  2. Words to rules
    1. "zero" –> [– syllabic, – consonantal, – back] // [+ syllabic, +high, – back] _______ [+ syllabic]
    2. [+ consonantal, + voice] –> [+ nasal] // [ – syllabic, + nasal] _____
      If the language does not have nasal vowels, [ – syllabic] can be left out of the environment.
    3. [ – sonorant] –> [ – voice] / ________ {#, [ – voice]}
      Remember: the only segments that can be voiceless are obstruents.
    4. [+ stress] –> [+ long] // _____ Co [– stress]
    5. [+ syllabic, + back, – high, – tense] –> [+ round] // [+ stress, +round] Co ______
      I guess this means [a] is ultimately [ – tense] in the opinion of the authors.
    6. [ – sonorant, + voice] –> [+ continuant] // [+ syllabic] _____ [+syllabic]
