Introduction to Phonology Spring 2004 Problem Set 2

The point of this exercise is to get a rough idea of how many speech sounds we process when we speak/perceive natural language as opposed to when we listen consciously. The results will not be entirely accurate because, in the case of natural language, we'll use letters instead of phonemes, but it is the general speed range that we are interested in, not the details.

• There are two parts to this excercise. Do both of them.
• You may work with someone else in the class; if you do, submit one set of results under both names.
• If you are not a native-speaker of English, find someone who is to be the reader in part 1.
• If you are a graduate student, you may have done this exercise for me in another class. Please do it again...fresh.
