Introduction to Phonology
Spring 2004
Problem Set 1
Due: January 29, 2004

  • In section 4 (pp. 9–11), Halle & Clements discuss the issue of rule ordering
(something we'll consider in much more detail later on).
  • On page 10, 3rd paragraph from the bottom, they describe a simple experiment to determine
if English speakers phonetically distinguish pairs of words such as seating and seeding.
  • Following their directions, carry out the experiment yourself and write up your findings, including:
    • The number of correct identifications.
    • the number of incorrect identifications.
    • The percentage correct.
    • The percentage incorrect.
    • The conclusion: do you make the distinction or not?
  • You will do the speaking; you'll need to get someone else to do the listening.
  • If you are not a native speaker of English, then you'll need to find two subjects.
  • As part of your write up, record:
    • the age of the speaker (you, unless you're not a native speaker of English),
    • where the speaker has lived,
    • where the speaker lives.
  • Keep your write up to a maximum of one page.
  • Use a word processor.
