- In section 4 (pp. 9–11), Halle & Clements discuss the issue of rule ordering
(something we'll consider in much more detail later on).
- On page 10, 3rd paragraph from the bottom, they describe a simple experiment to determine
if English speakers phonetically distinguish pairs of words such as seating and seeding.
- Following their directions, carry out the experiment yourself and write up your findings, including:
- The number of correct identifications.
- the number of incorrect identifications.
- The percentage correct.
- The percentage incorrect.
- The conclusion: do you make the distinction or not?
- You will do the speaking; you'll need to get someone else to do the listening.
- If you are not a native speaker of English, then you'll need to find two subjects.
- As part of your write up, record:
- the age of the speaker (you, unless you're not a native speaker of English),
- where the speaker has lived,
- where the speaker lives.
- Keep your write up to a maximum of one page.
- Use a word processor.
