Women, Children, & HIV

Although we have been fighting HIV/AIDS for over 20 years, most people are still not aware of the seriousness and scope of the problem. The United Nations has said that this epidemic could cause the collapse of many governments and result in disastrous global economic and political instability. Currently, there are over 43 million men, women and children with HIV/AIDS. About 30 million of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over two thirds of them are women.  In Sub-Saharan Africa, girls under 15 are infected 200% faster than boys.  Experts predict that HIV/AIDS will reach as much as a 50% level in some areas of Asia in the next several years if proper measures are not taken soon. In the U. S. over 30% of the new HIV cases are among women and most of those are women of child-bearing years. Of newly infected women, about 64% are Black, 18% are White, and 18% are Hispanic. The United States has better resources for people living with HIV/AIDS, however, too many individuals, especially women, are not accessing needed health and social services..
