| Pride's Amazing
Dippikill Weekend Retreat - (weekend of Nov 14th and 15th)
Officially, 5 people were signed up for Dippikill as of the day before we
left, but we ended up having about 12 people come up to the cabin. The
entire weekend was indescribably fun. From buying the food, to hiking
difficulties, to cooking massive amounts of pasta, and a little car trouble,
you really couldn't ask to have more fun. Due to confidentiality, we cannot
describe everything that happened or names, but we may have pictures in the
office at some point. It was such a great way to bond with people in the
group and see a little less concrete for a while that we might just do it
again!! |
| Civil Marriage Debate
- (date is a mystery) Unfortunately there was a mix-up in some e-mail communication on when the
civil marriage debate was, therefore, we lack. Laaaaack! We also lack for
advertising it to so many people and classes. Hopefully they joined the
apathy train and didn't show up. |
| Ross Levi At a Pride
Meeting - (Nov 4th) Ross Levi from the Empire State Pride
Agenda came to a meeting to talk about what is happening with LGBT issues in
the political arena. We learned what rights we do not have, what rights we
do have, when we got them, what is currently being fought for, why some
causes are fought for harder than others, and how to effectively contribute
to this effort ourselves. We focused mainly on civil marriages. We wanted to
use this knowledge for the debate on civil marriages, but we'll just have to
save it for when we plan the event in the spring. |
| NYPIRG At a Pride
Meeting - (Oct 28th) Katie from NYPIRG did a really great
presentation on how to be effective activists for the community. She covered
the types of activisms that we could do, how we could do it, and why we
should do it. By the end of the meeting we had a calendar filled out for the
month leading up to our civil marriage event in the spring. Big hug to Katie
for all of her help. |
| Coming Out Day
- (Oct 9th) We celebrated Coming Out Day a little early this year so
we could have a speaker, Mona Shaw, executive director of the CDGLCC, speak
about issues of coming out. We would like to thank her for her outstanding
speech. We also tabled all day with information about coming out, pride, and
issues of civil marriages. We collected over 100 signatures in support of
civil marriages and distributed over 500 quarter flier to sign the online
petition for the same issue. In addition to this, we chalked the podium with
messages of support and pride for the LGBT community. For that entire week,
we had the pride flag hanging in front of the campus center to remind us
that the campus supports us in our fight for equality. This was the second
year that we has a free standing door to mock come out of the closet. We
took a bunch of pictures of people coming out of the closet door which we
will have up here soon. We'd like to thank every one for "coming out"
to support us!! |
