Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge Website

Overview:-

The goal of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge website is to provide an individual with a very brief history of the Poughkeepsie –Highland Railroad Bridge from its inception through efforts today to transform it into the world’s long pedestrian bridge. The main focus will be on the physical construction as well as maintenance and labor followed by the fire and attempts to rehabilitate the bridge. Included in this site are some video clips and quotes from people interviewed as part of the joint oral history project between the Hudson River Valley Institute and Walkway Over the Hudson. I have had the privilege of working on this project for the last year and a half conducting and transcribing these interviews. There are even a few of the transcribed interviews available for viewing. A highly recommended book about the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge is Carleton Mabee's Bridging the Hudson: The Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge and Its Connecting Rail Lines, A Many-Faceted History. Mabee's writing contains many interesting facts and stories of people involved with the Poughkeepsie Bridge. His work inspired me to create this website. I hope you enjoy and come away with a little knowledge about this magnificent structure.
