Mission & history
Gentrification
There are many neighborhoods that are undergoing ethnic "face lifts" as we speak. Our communities have been changing and the histories that have been passed along from generation to generation have been disrupted. We are left with broken communities and frustrated neighbors. We need to be more informed about this phenomenon.
Reading between the Lines: Graffiti Art
Today graffiti is viewed as a form of vandalism. The public tends to overlook it because it is depicted as a criminal act. However, it can be a form of expression used by the individual and group in order to connect to other members of their culture.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Community in Latin America
A rapidly growing demographic that faces discrimination for not only being a Latino/a, but also for their sexual orientation. This is an example of a group of people coming together to be heard and to be understood.
Latin American Films
Most Latin American films deal with the social/political/ and economical context or history of said country. Many of the issues that latinos want to speak about are illustrated through film as another form of expression like graffiti.
Horizontal Hostility
Different Latin American countries have certain differences and tensions. This is something that will not do if Latinos are to come together to rectify some of the problems that we as Latinos face every day. This workshop will serve to educate on these different issues and discuss how we can resolve said problems.
Protests
This workshop is simply about a more literal interpretation of the title. This is not about armed conflicts like those seen in the 17th annual conference, but rather about people taking to the streets trying to be heard. People from all over converging on the streets to help solve issues that one could not solve on their own. Las Madres de La Plaza de Mayo is an example of the protests we will be covering in this workshop- it started out as peaceful attempt to protest the disappearances of family members suspected to be the fault of the Argentinean government and emerged into a movement that spread across South America.
