Recent courses taught and information on Independent Study Independent Study (PSY297/297Z/397/397Z) There are typically 3-4 undergraduate students engaged in independent study in my laboratory every semester. Students work 8-10 hours per week learning basic and advanced skills by assisting in all phases of the research endeavor. My goal is to prepare students for advanced training in psychology or other fields. Writing credit is also available in the second semester. Introduction to Social Psychology (PSY270) This course focuses on the relation between the individual and the group, the influence of culture and of institutions on human personality, the nature and types of leadership, factors in the development of social attitudes and the psychology of mass movements and of social decisions. Psychology 101 is a prerequisite. No waiting lists are kept and permission numbers are given out on the first day of class. The course focuses on the self as an organizing system in psychology. We will discuss a variety of topics related to the self, beginning with the sources of self-knowledge and how people gather information about the self and their motives for doing so. Next, we will examine the self in relation to others, including how others affect our self-appraisals, emotions, and goals. We will also discuss how others influence our behavior when we engage in impression management and the effects of impression management on our own self-views. Finally, we will discuss how the self makes decision, initiates actions, and in other ways exerts control over both self and environment. Psychology 101, 270, and 211 are prerequisites. Intimate Relationships (PSY450Q/450Z) The purpose of this course is to provide the latest scientific findings about the processes that regulate thoughts, feelings, and behavior in close relationships. Topics include the development of relationships, attraction, ending relationships, attachment, and love. A limited number of seats are offered writing intensive. Psychology 101, 270, and 211 are prerequisites. Advanced Social Psychology II (PSY606) Graduate level course that provides a general overview of the field of social psychology. Primary goal is to learn the latest theory and methods of social psychology and how to critique research. Open to graduate students with permission of instructor. Advanced Seminar on the Self (PSY780) Advanced graduate level course that covers cross-discipline theories of the self. Open to graduate students with permission of instructor. Advanced graduate level course on theories of emotions from a social psychological perspective. Open to graduate students with permission of instructor. |
