Textbook(s) and Software

This course uses Fundamentals of Biostatistics, 6th Edition by Bernard Rosner as the principal textbook. You can purchase this text on-line at many of the retail outlets that sell books (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, check ICHAPTERS for a discounted price, etc.). A new copy will cost a little over $150, though you should be able to find used copies for much less money (Amazon, Abe's Books --- a good site for used books). It is important to remember that you use the 6th edition in that earlier editions are different in many ways, for example problem numbers are different across editions. Also, you might see an International Edition for sale ... DO NOT BUY that edition.

A supplemental text is strongly recommended, The Cartoon Guide to Statistics by Larry Gornick and Woollcott Smith. It is a softcover book and can also be purchased on-line. A new copy is less than $15 (as with Rosner, there are used copies available on the web). This book is not required but our previous students have found that it helps to understand the material in Rosner.

Each student is required to purchase access to a web based statistical software package called StatCrunch. You can purchase access to the software for 6 months for $12.00 (or $22.50 for 12 months). Information on how to purchase your access is available on the StatCrunch web site. Just click on SUBSCRIBE (found on the left side of the web page).
