It is most helpful to us if you answer all of the questions, but please feel free to omit or leave blank any or all questions for any reason.

part 2:

The remainder of this survey deals with two ways to express musical melodies in a simplified form: one by means of pitch (the P code) and the other by means of rhythm (the R code). The P code deals with the relative pitch of each pair of consecutive notes. For each pair of notes, we simply record whether the second note is Up, Down, or a Repeat in terms of pitch relative to the first note in the pair. Consider the following example (You may listen to the notes by clicking on the play button below, which are also presented visually using Western musical notation. The colored arrows are added for clarification):

The P code is:

The U is derived from the fact that the second note is Up as compared to the first note. The D comes from the fact that third note is Down as compared to the second note. Finally, the fourth note is a Repeat of the third note's pitch. For a given section of a melody, there is always one less character in the P code than the number of notes.

Here is another example:

The P code is:

The R code is very similar to the P code, except it focuses on the rhythm instead of the pitch. The characters used are L for Longer, S for Shorter, and R for a Repeat in duration of two consecutive notes. Here is an example:

The R code is:

This comes from the following characteristics of the melody: The second note is Shorter than the first note, the third note is Longer than the second note, and the fourth note is a Repeat in duration of the third note.

Here is an example from what may be a familiar melody to you. This time both the P and R codes are presented.

The P code is:
The R code is:

Part 3:

You will now be presented with 3 examples of melodies via audio. For each one, you will be asked to create the P code and the R code. The examples will get progressively more difficult; please do the best you can. You may listen to them as many times as you like. Feel free to pause and/or rewind as well.
