Quoting Mardi Crawford (from the cdjp_discussion@lists.riseup.net email list. More info on that here):

Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 22:11:04 -0400
From: Martin and Mardi
Subject: Planning for 10/25 Rally in DC
To: CDJP Discussion ListServ

[ DELETED ]

I propose that there be some pre-meeting discussion on the listserv of
tasks and logistics, as well as about goals and strategies. Those of
us who discussed this event at the last CDJP meeting made two
assumptions--there will be one or more buses going to CD from the
Capital Region, and there will be some sort of kick-off event locally.
We talked about several tasks, and I have added a few more based on
bus trips/events in April & Oct last year and Jan, Feb, and March
this year--additions, corrections etc invited)

- Reserving buses
- Coordinating bus ticket sales to ensure smooth bus loading (and that
  # of riders and # of buses match :-)
- Selling tickets
- Raising money to subsidize some riders
- Planning publicity/outreach to fill the buses
- (The above two can be addressed by, among other things, phone
banking, which will require collecting contact info formaking phone
calls, designing flyers, distributing flyers, etc)
- Coordinating bus logistics (identifying bus captains,
collecting/disseminating trip info for riders, etc)
- Establishing/ maintaining contact with national organizers

- Deciding on one or more local kickoff events
- Designing the program(s)
- Publicizing the event(s) to achieve high attendance
- Doing media work to achieve coverage in the local press of the
  event(s) & buses/rally

Before the initial meeting, there needs to be a lot of organizing to
ensure that students and others new to the region, communities not
well-represented on this listserv such as immigrant communities and
communities of color, and others have a full opportunity to take
leadership roles in this process.

I hope many of you share my enthusiam and energy for this event!

-Mardi

Quoting Mardi Crawford (from the sjcaction@yahoogroups.com email list. More info on that here):

The next meeting of CDJP--and all persons interested in continuing to organize for the peace/anti-war/anti-racism weekend of Martin Luther King Jr Holiday and planning immediate response(s) to an invasion of Iraq is:

Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6pm. We have a room at the Albany Public Library, and possibly an auditorium there (there has been some confusion over names of groups). If we wind up in the meeting room, it will be crowded, but seemed better than trying to get the word out to all from the last meeting (12/5) about a new location.

There are committee meetings in the meantime. There was discussion last week of also having another general meeting on 12/12, but to my knowledge this did not become final. If anyone else has different info about this, please get it onto the list!

Quoting Joe Seeman (from the sjcaction@yahoogroups.com email list. More info on that here):

We have initiated a call for Peace events on or around Martin Luther King's Birthday. Our goal is to bring together a diverse set of participants to plan these events together (beginning at the Dec. 5th meeting).

Some of the ideas that will be discussed include:
  1. Learning about and planning support for already-existing plans for peace, anti-war and anti-racism events
  2. Planning logistics for sending buses to Washington DC for a demonstration on Jan 18th, 2003. (This is a national call to action, based on (for example) Dr. King's message in his Beyond Vietnam speech at Riverside Church in 1967, when he stated: For the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent. (More info on that here).
  3. Developing local multi-racial, nonviolent, anti-war/peace actions.
We expect many of the local pro-peace groups that we have worked with in the past to participate, including groups such as Interfaith Alliance, Solidarity Committee, Peace Action, Women Against War, Campus Action, Labor-Religion Coalition, Alliance for Democracy, Greens, Citizen Action of NY, etc. We also want to reach out more widely than the usual peace crowd, particularly to local residents who may suffer disproportionately from a war that may spend hundreds of billions of dollars that could otherwise be used to provide health care, education, child care, housing, and other basic human needs. Towards that end, we especially would like to welcome persons in leadership in local religious & community organizations to participate.
