Embrace the Dream…Work for Peace
Capital District for Justice and Peace (CDJP) urges everyone to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
antiwar, nonviolent peace work and the multi-racial movement he inspired.
Friday, January 17
- A "Candlelight Peace March" will leave from the NY State Capitol at 4:30 PM (assemble 4:15 PM at the east steps, Eagle St./Washington Ave.). The march will end with a rally in Townsend Park (Henry Johnson Blvd/Central Ave.) to begin our weekend of celebrating Dr. King’s message of peace and to kick off the bus trip to Washington for a national antiwar/peace rally. - CDJP and a coalition of regional peace activists are organizing buses to Washington DC for a Mass Demonstration to honor Dr. King and his legacy by opposing war and demanding instead that these dollars be spent on jobs, education, housing, and healthcare. – The Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition of the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission is holding their 18th annual march and celebration in honor of Dr. King’s message. The march begins at 2:00 PM in front of the First United Methodist Church at 603 State St. in downtown Schenectady. People carrying messages of peace are encouraged to join the march. A program focusing on "Youth and the Connection to the Civil Rights Movement" will follow the march at the First United Methodist Church. Monday, January 20
– The Center for Law and Justice (CLJ) is sponsoring "The People’s Celebration of Martin Luther King’s Life and Principles". The event begins at 8:30 am in hearing Room C, Legislative Office Building in Albany. This year’s event will focus on the impact of incarceration on families and communities. These same communities will suffer disproportionately when military spending strips money away from schools and social justice programs. People carrying peace messages are encouraged to join CLJ in a march to the Martin Luther King Memorial in Lincoln Park. Bring signs! Plan to assemble for the march at 11:30 AM in front of the State museum on Madison Avenue. – Local labor solidarity groups co-host "Martin Luther King and Labor". This labor celebration highlights Dr. King’s commitment to worker rights and civil rights. The event will begin between 12-1:00pm (after the march) at the Thomas O’Brien Academy near Lincoln Park in Albany. The keynote speaker is Jack Landron – civil rights activist, actor, singer, and songwriter. The program is free and includes a buffet lunch. In addition to Jack Landron’s performance and speech, other spirited entertainment will be provided. Please invite your family, friends and co-workers to this celebration. The Troy Area United Ministries (TAUM) is hosting a breakfast at 8:00 AM at the Italian Community Center at 1450 5th Ave. in Troy. The featured speaker is Dr. Eddie Ade Knowles, VP of Student Life at Rensselaer. He will deliver a message of Peace and Justice in honor of Dr. King.
