Department of Psychology

North Dakota State University

The Department of Psychology at North Dakota State University announces a tenure track position (rank open) in VISUAL OR COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE beginning August 16, 2010. Applicants with research interests in the electrophysiological (i.e., high-density EEG) investigation of visual or cognitive processes, psychophysical or computational approaches to vision, multisensory integration, attention processes, executive function, or social neuroscience are especially encouraged to apply. We offer a low teaching load, doctoral programs in Visual/Cognitive Neuroscience and Health/Social Psychology, and a supportive and dynamic research environment. The minimum qualifications for the position are: Ph.D. degree, evidence of research accomplishment, excellent potential for external funding, ability to teach courses in our curriculum, ability to interact effectively with colleagues and students, and effective oral and written communication skills. For more information go to http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndsu/psychology <http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndsu/psychology> . To apply send a cover letter describing research and teaching interests, a CV, copies of representative publications, and available summaries of teaching evaluations. Also include the names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three potential references. Submit materials electronically to http://jobs.ndsu.edu <http://jobs.ndsu.edu> . Direct inquiries to Mark E. Applications will be reviewed beginning December 15, 2009 and will be accepted until the position is filled. NDSU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

NIH-funded Grant: “Predicting Speech Quality after Tongue Cancer Surgery”

Predicting Speech Quality after Tongue Cancer Surgery
NIH-funded Grant

The NIH-funded Grant “Predicting Speech Quality after Tongue Cancer Surgery,” is being conducted at the University of Maryland Dental and Medical Schools (PI: Maureen Stone), along with collaborators at UM College Park (Carol Espy-Wilson) and Johns Hopkins University (Jerry Prince). The study aims to quantify the effects of a large number of factors on speech quality, including surgical closure procedure, resection size, patient coping skills, and speech therapy, among others. The study involves diffusion tensor imaging and tagged MR imaging to associate the physical changes in tongue anatomy and motion, as well as the vocal tract shape, with successful and failed speech compensation strategies.

To support the study, a two-year post-doctoral position is available beginning after July 1, 2009. Although applicants with skills and interests in all research topics relevant to the study will be considered, we specifically encourage applications from those with doctoral degrees in applied math, computer science, or related fields with experience in data mining, pattern recognition, and statistics. Background and experience with the measurement and visualization of high-dimensional, spatio- temporal imaging data is also highly desirable.

To apply, please send a CV, a personal statement, and three letters of
reference to mstone@umaryland.edu . Materials may also be sent by mail to Maureen Stone, University of Maryland Dental School, Dept of NPS – 8th Floor, 650 W. Baltimore St, Baltimore, MD, 21201. Further information may be obtained at these addresses or by telephoning Dr. Stone at 410- 706-1269. Applications will be considered immediately and will be
reviewed until the position is filled.

National Science Foundation
Perception, Action, and Cognition

Two positions are available at NSF as Program Director for Perception, Action, and Cognition. One is a rotator position and the other is permanent. The NSF Rotator Program, allows a professor to come to Washington for a year or two and assume the role and responsibilities of a program officer. Program Officers run the review meetings ("Panels" at NSF), are very involved in funding decisions, and can have a permanent effect in shaping the field.

For the rotator position, one does not have to take a sabbatical, as most institutions will allow a leave of absence (the NSF pays your full salary either through your university or as a federal employee). This is valuable experience to learn about how the grants process works, and get to enjoy all that Washington has to offer.

The PAC rotator position is posted at:
