Save my life!  A goal setting WebQuest for 8th grade students

Please feel free to use this WebQuest to enhance learning your classroom.  The ultimate goal of this is not only to provide a platform for discovering lifestyle diseases using technology, but more importantly to help students learn and practice an essential health education skill: Planning and Goal Setting

In a perfect world, this WebQuest would occur while the students are working on their own personal health goal.  This is meant to reinforce the steps a person needs to take in order to successfully make a positive change in his life.  KidsHealth.org has a great personal goal setting interactive tool — check it out!  Something to keep in mind...research says that it takes at least 21 days for a behavior to become a habit.

When all of the portfolios are ready, have the students use each other’s work to learn more about the diseases they didn’t study — you may consider setting up a Learning Fair in your classroom or in the Library Media Center displaying their work.  Feel free to have the students use this chart to guide their learning.

Although Wikipedia isn’t a valid research source, I do encourage my students to use it as a starting point, especially if they have no prior knowledge of a topic.

For more information on SMART goals, check this website.  I use a modified version of the wording to make it more student-friendly.

For more information on primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention methods, check out this website.  Prior to this WebQuest, students should have an understanding of at least primary and secondary prevention methods.
