November 6, 2003 marks the first time Koach has been a recognized
organization on campus in years!
Koach on the UAlbany
campus is the same thing. Each Jewish group on campus has a mission.
Ours is to bring the Conservative movement of Judaism to students. There
is no cost to join! Just show up to one of our events and you're in!
Accordingly, we offer Kabbalat Shabbat services every Friday
night that school is in session. In general, the location changes every
other week. We will be either in the Chapel
House or in Campus Center 364. We then enjoy a traditional Shabbat
dinner with the rest of the Jewish community. Dinner is offered either by Shabbos
House, or by Hillel
in the Campus
Center. Once a month, we offer Havdalah services. For more
information, check out our calendar!
In addition to Shabbos, we hold events such as movie nights,
prayer study, and making our own religious artifacts! Our movie nights
include a movie and then a discussion about it relates to us as Conservative
Jews (of course, Kosher snacks are always provided). Some movies we have
seen so far are American History X, Swing Kids, Hebrew Hammer,
and American
Wedding. We are
just beginning to work on prayer study, but as of now, it is a meeting we call
"Kickin' with Kabbalat" where we get together and discuss what we
would like to include in our service. We will be having Kippot making, as
well as other fun craft activities!
Unfortunately,
while we are very fortunate to have a great budget, Student Association rules
prohibit using these funds for religious purposes. Being that we are a
religious organization, we will be doing fundraising for such objects.
Please contact koach@albany.edu if you
would like to donate, or if you have any fundraising ideas.
