What is Matrimony?

The sacrament of matrimony takes place when two people love each other and decide to make a life-long commitment to stay together and be a family. Matrimony is also known as marriage.

What do people do to prepare for the sacrament of matrimony?

A couple who wants to get married will consult with their priest. They take special classes and also have the banns of marriage announced to their church community. This is way to double check and make sure both people are really eligible to get married.

Who can get married in the Catholic church?

Individuals who are baptized and are in the state of grace, meaning they have received reconciliation and confirmation, and who are not already married or in some other way unable to legally marry, can participate in Holy Matrimony.

What happens during a marriage ceremony?

The individuals who are becoming joined in matrimony stand before a priest and at least two other witnesses and make vows to one another and exchange rings, which are signs of their promises to one another.

The Catholic church tells us that once a couple is married, they are married for life. In cases where a couple must get divorced due to extreme circumstances, the Catholic church still sees them as married and they should not remarry.
