Fort Orange was established.

The First Church in Albany founded.

Beverwyck created as a seperate jurisdiction.

Dutch surrendered New Netherland to the Duke of York.
1673
Dutch regain control of New York for a year.
1676
The English bulid a new fort overlooking Albany.

Albany County created.
1686
The British granted Albany a founding charter as a city.
1761
Schuyler Mansion (32 Catherine Street), Georgian Mansion, was built for Philip Schyler,
general of the American Revolution.
1771
The Albany Gazette, Albany's first newspaper begins publication.
1787
Georgian-style home known as Cherry Hill was built.
1791
Abany Institute of History and Art was founded to collect,perserve, interpret and promote interest
in the history, art and culture of Albany.
1794
The shore was improved and a city block extended easterly.
Private docks were built and the city developed Quay Street.
1797
Albany named the capital of New York State.
1798
Ten Broeck Mansion, Federal-style home bulit.
1799
New York State passes law that will abolish slavery by 1827.
1825
Dock Street that housed many stores, warehouses and homes was renamed Dean Street.
1826
What is now known as Hampton Plaza at 38 State Street was built to be used as a bank.
1844
State University, University at Albany established. It is the oldest state-charted institutions of the public higher educationin New York.
1848
Great fire leveled neary all of downtown Albany from Hudson Avenue south Herkimer St. (more than 500 buildings were lost).
1875
Building erected that houses present day Jack's Oyster's House.
1879
Spice companies and whoelsale coffee roasters built large warehouses on Dean and Exchange Streets, which were strategically placed near,
railroad companies, trolley bridge and stations.
1881
Corner stone laid for City Hall.
1902
Building at 351 Broadway which was formerly the Hudson River Day Line ticket and now L'Auberge Restaurant was built.
1930
Albany Symphony Orchestra (19 Clinton Ave) was started.
1931
Palace Theater (corner of Clinton Ave and North Pearl St.)opened.
1934
The Federal Building was constructed on Broadway.
1965-1978
The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza was constructed.
1971
Washington Avenue extension opened.
1980-1981
Capital Repertory Theater (111 North Pearl) was opened.
1984
Crossgates Mall opened.
2002
Mayor Jennings opened the downtown foot bridge.
