About This Site

Spanish Artists was created by Janet Dymond, a graduate student in the Information Science and policy program at SUNY Albany in April 2004. To contact the creator, send an e-mail to jd7111@albany.edu

The website is intended to provide information on famous Hispanic artists. The purpose of the site is not to provide extensive details on the individual artists, but instead to supply brief biographical sketches, an overview of the artistic genres in which the artists participated and some examples of their paintings. The audience targeted is sixteen to eighty years old with an interest in Spanish Artists, but with very little exposure to Spanish artists or knowledge of art.

In selecting which artists to include in the website, I chose to include two well-known artists: Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. I also included Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist, who, while lesser known than Dali and Picasso, is certainly renowned in her own right. Finally, Francisco de Goya and Diego Velazquez were selected because I thought it best to include prominent artists who may not be as well known in the United States as they are in Spain; certainly their notoriety has been surpassed by Picasso and Dali. I also tried to choose artists that were representative of a wide variety of artistic genres, like surrealism, cubism, and self-portraits.
