St.Peter's Gate

St.Peter's Gate
St. Peter's Gate is the main entrance to the fortress. Built by Domenico Trezzini in 1717-1718, this is the only historical and architectural monument that has come down to us almost unchanged inside the fortress [1, p.68]. "Hanging over the archway is a double-headed eagle, the emblem of the Russian Empire, along with bas-reliefs of the Apostle Peter" [2. p.75]. The carver, Konrad Osner, gave the Apostle the features of the czar. "Beyond the gate is His Majesty's Bastion, used as a dungeon for Peter's prisoners" [1. p.67].
