The Neva Gate

On the left (southern) side of the cathedral you will see an archway in the fortress wall beyond which there stands one of the best architectural structures in the fortress, the Neva Gate. Through these gates you can go out onto the Commandant's Pier.

A three-span granite bridge joins the Neva Gate with the recessed grounds of the Commandant's Pier.

The Neva gate is known as the "Gate of Death" because prisoners were led through it to the execution spot[1, p.75]. Now it leads to the beach area (with a spectacular view) that is quite crowded in summer with sunbathers.
