University at Albany
Golden Grid
Planning Studio Project
The Golden Grid Planning Studio is a continuation of an initiative by the
University at Albany to achieve an environmentally sustainable campus
through implementing efficient land use practices and energy saving
measures. Our focus is mainly to lay the foundation and define a permanent
grid consisting of pedestrian and bicycle pathways, access roads, corridors
that connect the various facilities and open spaces within the Main Campus,
and pathways between the three areas of the uptown campus (Harriman Campus,
Main Campus, CESTM Nanotech) and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Four studies were conducted addressing (1) access to open spaces, (2)
connections between the three areas of the uptown campus and the surrounding
neighborhoods, (3) connections within the Main Campus area, and (4)
connections within the podium area. These studies take into consideration
pathway connections between parking lots and the podium, campus residence
buildings, and open spaces in order to enhance pedestrian mobility and
encourage well thought out campus development in a "human-scale"
environment.
Utmost priority is taking into consideration the health, safety, lighting,
and convenience of the pathway infrastructure which serves the UAlbany
community. Design recommendations are based on a detailed survey of the
existing conditions of pathways and corridors, observing interaction of the
community with campus infrastructure, survey findings of the built
environment, discussion with the UAlbany community, and future plans and
development of the various factions and disciplines on campus.
