Project Findings

From contacting multiple pedestrian groups with different levels of involvement it was important to define the term 'Pedestrian Group'. We decifered that there are three generalized types of Pedestrian groups: (1) Users, (2) Advocates, (3) and Policy Makers and within these categories at least nine organization types which include Users: (1) Internet Based Walking Groups, (2) Recreational Pedestrian, (3) Competitive Pedestrian, (4) Pedestrian Events, Advocates: (5) Program Based (State, Non-profit), (6) Safety, Alternative Transportation, or Advocates with pedestrian concerns as one of its focuses, (7) Neighborhood Associations / Community Groups, (8) Tourism, and Policy Makers: (9) State and Local government agencies.

An analysis of the survey data revealed that each types of pedstrian groups had different interests and needs. Government agencies were the most likely to express interest in obtaining more information on policy level pedestrian group issues. Advocates were the most aware of policy level pedestrian group issues but were mainly interested in information on grant opportunities for walkable communities. Users were the least aware and least likely to express interest in policy level pedestrian group issues. All Pedestrian Groups wanted access to other pedestrian groups revealing that there is potential to strengthen the pedestrian group network.

Since the survey instrument was focused on a broad range of pedestrian topics it was a useful gauge to measure the level of awareness for each of these groups. We recommend further study of each category of pedestrian groups with questions which would cater to their interests and needs.
