Lindsay Hixson is a Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology at the State University of New York-Albany. She is currently working on her dissertation which is a reconceptualization of cohabitation. Using Critical Demography, her research aims to acknowledge the diversity of cohabitational experiences, especially those of long-term, stable cohabitors.  In addition to her dissertation research, she is currently working on a couple of papers (along with colleagues) on the white population and on native and immigrant Latinos.

Lindsay is the Assistant Director of Capitalize on Community, an HIV prevention program which focuses on the black and Latino Communities in the Capital District. She teaches the Capitalize on Community class which focuses on the issues of HIV and community development. She also oversees the student volunteers that volunteer at the various community partner sites throughout Albany. She believes that Capitalize on Community is a wonderful example of public sociology that is rewarding for both her and the students.

Lindsay earned her Masters degree in Sociology at Portland State University where she taught for three years. While in Portland, she engaged in various research projects including an assessment of campus climate in diversity classes, a strategic planning project for a foundation supporting grassroots groups, and a legal needs study of the homeless in Oregon.

Her research interests are race and ethnicity, demography, and alternative family structures. She is currently a member of the American Sociological Association, Pacific Sociological Association, Association of Blacks Sociologists, and Sociologists for Women in Society.

Lindsay grew up in Kentucky and received her Bachelors degree at Northern Kentucky University in Applied Cultural Studies.
