on Community is a HIV Prevention project
that represents a collaboration between
the Dept. of Sociology, School of Public Health,
and the School of Social Welfare here at SUNY-Albany.
In the community we've partnered with the Whitney
M. Young Health Center, the Stratton VA Med Center,
The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York, the
Capital District African American Coalition on
AIDS, St. John's Community Development Corporation,
Centro Civico (New York State’s leading
Latino community development organization) and
Clement & Associates (a black and female-owned
healthcare consulting firm). Together, we are
pulling together the community to improve HIV
Prevention in the black community in Albany and
the Latino community of Amsterdam.
We are going
to hold community forums, conduct focus groups
and face-to-face interviews to find out why there
is a disconnect between the faith-based community,
healthcare providers and victims of HIV/AIDS.
Ultimately, we will provide leadership in the
development of programs and policies to enhance
efforts to prevent the spread of this dreaded
Volunteers will play a major role in
helping us to get the word out, recruit other
volunteers, as well as conducting our research.
Also, students will benefit by earning 3 credits.
We hope to involve students at other area schools
This is a
very important project and an excellent opportunity
for students. I welcome your participation.
