2. Unite for Haiti
On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 earthquake rocked the southern part of Haiti.
A day after this catastrophic event, CNN along with other news stations started showing the
aftermath. Rotting corpses of adults and children filled the streets while silent screams of those
buried alive echoed in the ears of the hopeful. Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive stated that
70,000 bodies had been buried, about a third of the estimated final death toll. This is a figure
that does not include the unknown number of bodies buried by families or collected by the
U.N. peacekeeping mission. It is estimated that 3 million people are in need of food, water,
shelter and medical assistance and this is how we can help. The ABSW, SWSA, AMA, NOLA,
The Haitian Student Association and the GSO are getting together to throw a fundraiser to
help benefit the current crisis in Haiti.
When: February 9th Where: Lark Tavern Time: 9:00-12:00
There will be special guest performances, an open mic, raffles and prizes.
There is a $5 Suggested Donation. We will also be collecting clothes andnon-perishable
food items. Come out and show your support.

3. TA Volunteers Needed
TA volunteers required to assist a School of Public Health student with a survey of UAlbany
Undergrads. Bob Bednarczyk is a doctoral candidate at the School of Public Health. He is
currently working on finalizing his dissertation research, part of which involves surveying
UAlbany undergraduate students on knowledge, attitudes and practices related to human
papilloma virus and the HPV vaccine (it is a 10-15 minute self-administered survey). He is
looking to do surveys in larger, general-education, undergraduate classes and is seeking your
assistance. He would like to come in during the class and would need about 15 minutes at
the end of the class period to present and explain the survey to the students, gauge interest,
distribute informed consent and survey packets, and collect surveys when they are completed.
If you are willing to help, please contact him (rabednarczyk@yahoo.com) with the class you
teach, the meeting day/time, and he will be in touch with you to work out details.

7. How to find the right academic job for you
How to find the right academic job for you (and compete for it!)
Thursday, February 4, 2:30 - 4:00 PM (ITLAL Underground-LI 069)
You know you want an academic job, but where? Most students assume they would
be
happiest at a research university (like UAlbany), but 80% of PhD graduates don't end up
working at research universities, and many who do aren't happy in that environment.
Join us for a panel discussion with faculty members from local institutions (including
liberal arts and community colleges) to learn what their faculty life is like so that you
can target your job search to the type of institution that will best fit your career
interests. We will also discuss how to tailor your application package so that it will
be attractive to a search committee at a non-research institution.
