Paper #2

Case Analysis

Write a five-to-seven page paper that addresses one of the cases below.

The competing values framework provides a dramatic, even elegant, synthesis of roles and competencies. Unfortunately, limited class time precludes us from analyzing the many case studies that can enlarge our appreciation of individual competencies. Let's correct this by examining one of these at greater length.

Choose one of the case studies / analyses referred to below and examine it. You can use the questions supplied as part of the analyss and/or substitute your own as your examination warrents. You do not need to repeat the case study to set the scene for your analysis; neither should you simply answer the questions and avoid a more integrated discussion of problems and opportunities.

Refer to either the latest (fourth) edition or the third edition to find the cases noted below.

1. Improving Performance in the Health Care Industry, p. 139 (4th ed.)

2. What's My Job Design? p. 176 (4th ed.); p. 167 (3rd ed.)

3. Errors in the Design, p. 186 (4th ed.); p. 176 (3rd ed.)

4. Vision During Challenging Times, p. 197 (4th ed.); p. 189 (3rd ed.)

5. Designing & Organizing as a Result of Changing Technology, p. 223 (4th ed.); p. 215 (3rd ed.)

6. The Case of Michael Simpson, p. 243 (4th ed.); p. 240 (3rd ed.)

As with the first paper, feel free to explore alternatives, make recommendations, and assess their consequences. The questions supplied are usually helpful, but should not constrain your approach to the topic.

Remember to provide citations for the organizational situation you are examining if you refer to other texts besides Quinn et al.
